Spirey Silhouette

One of the large pagodas in Bagan, Burma/Myanmar, silhouetted against the sunrise.

Hauling Bananas

A typical street scene in Mandalay, Burma/Myanmar.

Outside the Standard Hotel

One day while visiting the High Line in NYC, I paused in front of the Standard Hotel, where three employees happened to be taking a quick break to get some air and chat.

Two Monks Visiting

These two monks were visiting Angkor Wat from Battambang, Cambodia where they walked into my photo and made it much better. The one in front was very outgoing and came over to chat for a while after I took this photo.

Photograph the Handsome One

In Burma/Myanmar people were incredibly friendly, and often wanted their photos taken. Here the friends of the man front and center nominated him as the "handsome one", and encouraged me to take pictures of him.

Catwalk Behind the Arsenale

One of my early film photos from Venice. Here of a secluded and seldom traversed catwalk on the back of the Arsenale wall.

Open Doors

Georgetown in Penang, Malaysia, is a bustling and modern city with a rich history which lands it on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Somewhat surprisingly, there are a number of blighted buildings in its otherwise thriving historic core, like this one here.

Ithaca Hippie

While eating lunch on the dock outside the Ithaca farmer's market, this guy came charging down the dock for a quick dip.

Guard

Outside the Thai equivalent of the Department of Defense, in Bangkok.

New Altar Old Altar

A provisional contemporary altar, set up in front of the much more robust but ruined one atop Phnom Bakeang near Angkor Wat, Cambodia.

Day's End on the Bacino

Taking the vaporetto back home after a misty and drizzly day of exploring the more remote parts of Venice. This is one of my early photos on film.

Ice Storm

The surreal landscape and light in rural Upstate NY on the morning after an ice storm.

Balloons Over Bagan

The silhouettes of the Bagan pagodas reaching up to hot air balloons touring above, just after sunrise.

The Monk and the Void

At Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples - like this one - many of the monks one encounters are also tourists. Before being bombarded by a dozen other tourists wanting their pictures taken with the monks, this particular one was making his own.

Piazza and Basilica San Marco in the Snow

On one of the last days of my semester in Venice it snowed, making an already surreal city all the more so.

Diversion Tunnel

While touring the hydro electric projects in the James Bay Region of Quebec, I was able to visit the construction site of the Rupert River diversion tunnel shortly before it was flooded. This scene no longer exists, a very large river now fills the tunnel in its entirety.

Light Pollution i

Three exposures of a tree against a stormy night sky, with the darkest one being the most faithful to how the scene appeared to the eye.

Light Pollution ii

Photographs of the trees and sky around Cornell University late at night, just after a snow storm. The surreal colors in this photo come from an over exposure of the city and campus lights reflected off the low clouds an snow, there was no image manipulation.

Rowing Home

The main means of transportation during the wet and cold seasons on Inle Lake.

Taigascape

The strange and stunted boggy landscape of the Quebecois Taiga, as seen from the James Bay Road.

Banded Landsape

The misty landscape of the marshes on Inle Lake in Burma/Myanmar during lotus season.

Skulls

The darker side of Cambodian history, at the Cheoung Ek killing fields, where the Khmer Rouge executed tens of thousands and dumped them in mass graves.

Torture Bed and Tools

The former Teuol Sleng Prison in Phnom Penh, where the Khmer Rouge tortured thousands before killing them. This is a former interrogation room.

What Are You Looking At?

The men in this boat were part of a group driving (by hand) wooden piles into the marsh alongside one of the channels, in Inle Lake.

I am Looking for the Fish . . .

Among the fishermen on Inle Lake in the morning, but not one of them.

Watching the Tourists Watching Them

This is the most popular spot to watch the sunset in Bagan, and everyone, from the tourists to the locals to the monks, comes here to see it. The sunset itself was fairly mediocre on this day, but the crowd was interesting.

Delivery Day!

When taking the slow boat down the Irrawady River from Mandalay to Bagan, be prepared to stop at all the little villages along the way, where you'll be presented with some anachronistic scenes.

Assembling to Haul Freight

The young men of one village ready to load and unload bulk cargo from the riverboat.

Strolling in the Sun

Two old men in the blindingly bright sunlight within a temple courtyard in Mandalay.

Play Monk Dog Butcher's Cleaver

For some reason this young monk was chasing after a dog with a meat cleaver, although they were both clearly playing. In Luang Prabang, Laos.

Winter Light and Dark

A series of exposures of an extreme panorama of a winter's landscape in Upstate NY.

Loading Platters

Loading woven reed platters onto the boat at a village along the way to Bagan.

Scooping Potatoes

A potato vendor in the Mandalay market, scooping potatoes into large sacks.
